Cars are for rent on many places, It's worth comparing the prices.
Drivers must be at least 21 years old and must be in the possession of a drivers licence for at least one year.
A passenger insurance has to be included, it is possible to take out supplementary insurances. |

Open mondays to fridays 08:30 - 15:00;
When you use Travellers or other cheques you have to show your passport.
Exchange Offices ("câmbios") always charge commission, although they always say that they don't! |
| Buses |
|
Local services are not very punctual, the regional services however are reasonably reliable, comfortable and inexpensive ( Albufeira-Lissabon € 22).
Don't forget that Portugal is a long country and the time you have to spend in the bus could easily be a few hours. Albufeira-Lissabon, for example, takes about 4 hours and Albufeira-Évora 3,5 uur.

It is also possible to call from the Post Offices, try to avoid the use of the telephone in your hotelroom or apartment, it is very expensive! |

Reliable and cheap (Albufeira - Lisbon 2nd klas about € 17)
The more luxury Intercity express is about 15% more expensive.
A first class ticket is not much more expensive (about 20%) advisable on longer distances.

| Traffic |
|
Portugal has the highest accident rate in Europe, so, be careful in traffic.
They hardly keep the speed limits and they overtake at the most impossible places.
Portugal doesn't have many motorways, there is one from Lisbon to the north and from Lisbon via Setúbal to Évora.
The motorway to the Algarve is ready.
For all motorways as well as the bridges near Lisbon you have to pay toll.
The Algarve has a motorway from Lagos to Faro and further to Spain.
Unfortunately this motorway is since the 8th of december 2011 not anymore tollfree!!
Some traffic rules:
- Within the built-up area: 60km
- Outside the built-up area: 90km
- Main roads: 100km
- Motorways: 120km
- The wearing of seatbells is compulsory.
- Alcohol 50mg per 100ml.
- Insurance and a valid british drivers license is compulsory.
